| Check Engine Light |
[01 Sep 2009|08:35am] |
Hi all,
I was riding around the other night, and my check engine light would come on intermittently. Near as I can tell, it intermittently comes on when I hit about 4200 RPM, goes off under 3000. This happens about 80% of the time...but on occasion I can get higher and all is well.
Any idea what would cause a spastic check engine light?

Real USSR tells a story about scooters industry development back in the Soviet Russia.
…"The decision was made at the level as high as the Cabinet of Ministers. The designers and engineers were given six months to produce the first models. Which was timely achieved, and in early 1957 the first scooters – called Vyatkas – by the name of the fac tory sit u ated in the Vyatka region – were introduced to the market".

Waiting at the lights on my vespa on my way to taiji, I hear "is it fast? Hey, is it fast?"
I turn to look to my right an see an eighties sedan with three ghetto-men inside. All with shaved heads and tattoos, shirtless, the guy in the passenger seat is leaning across his buddy and asks me again, "It is fast?'
"Yeah, goes one-ten."
The speaker seems impressed and looks at his buddies smiling. "Ever got it up to that speed?" he askes.
"Naw," I say, laughing along with the men in the car.
"Does it wobble?" he wonders.
"Huh?"
"For normal driving, does it wobble?"
"Not at all."
"It's really cool, I like the color. Must be fun to drive--is it?" he askes.
"Oh, yeah. I enjoy it."
The speaker smiles and oogles the bike. I'm praying, like hard, for the light to change so I don't have to be scrutinzed any longer. I look over again, and see the speaker is talking to his buddies about my bike and he looks all wishful and dreamy. Finally the light changes and I drive away.
It's bizzare the amout of people who'll lean out their car windows and start shootin' the s**t with me over my bike. Kinda cool, and like tonight, kinda weird....

Hello community!
You can call me Kiki. I'm a new to the two wheels mode of transportation who's about to take a riding course THIS weekend!! I plan to buy a new LX150 the weekend after that. I'm so excited, I can hardly stand it. In my part of the world (Atlantic Canada--but I'm sure it's not exlusive to my part of the world) I've been getting flack from 'true motorcyle' riders for my choice of bike. But I don't care one bit! I like how the vespa looks, and it's me that has to ride it after all, so if the harley's and the ninja's of the bike world make me quake, then it's a scooter I need, right?

I decided to change the look of my GTS a little bit. Someone on the Modern Vespa forum started a thread about mirror mods, and someone posted these really nice looking bar end mirrors. I never really did like the stock lollypop mirrors, so I decided to give it a go.
I replaced the stock bar ends with Rizoma bar ends (the mirrors need a non-tapered bar end to mount) and I picked up the Rizoma “Class Retro” bar end mirror.
Before:

After:

Really easy to do, and I think they look far better than the stock mirrors.

| More Newbie Qs! |
[06 Feb 2009|10:07am] |
Thank you all for your wonderful answers to my last post regarding my questions about the Buddy and gear and insurance and whatnot. I have a few more questions I was hoping y'all could help me with...
1. How big of a deal is it that I am not planning to get a Motorcycle License until about a month after I buy my scooter? I want to get proficient at the basics of driving it, then take an MSF course, and THEN try to get my license and I figure that will take 2-4 weeks. Is it going to be an issue, do you think?
2. How big of a deal is it that I probably won't have insurance driving off the lot today? I am planning to buy after my insurance office closes this afternoon, so I probably won't be able to get insured until Monday morning because they need my VIN.
3. Everyone who shared their insurance premiums with me had such amazingly low rates! The first quote I got, which is allegedly from a quality and affordable place, was $550/year. Why is it so expensive? Because I have no experience? No Motorcycle license? Because I'm 25? Because it's full coverage (vs. just liability)? What do most of y'all have (full vs. liability)?
4. If I buy a lighter mesh-type jacket to ride in, can I wear something heavier (like a coat or sweatshirt) over it during the colder months? Will that decrease its effectiveness as far as how protective/safe it is?
5. What's the best piece of advice you would give a new scooter-ist? What do you wish you'd known before you started scooting?
6. Is it a bad idea for me to try to drive my new scooter home from the dealership (3 miles)? How did you get your scooter home when you first purchased it?
Thanks, y'all!
-Jenn

| Genuine Buddy - To Buy or Not To Buy? |
[04 Feb 2009|06:10pm] |
Hi all,
So I am leaning toward purchasing a Genuine Buddy scooter this week from Scootersmith in Houston, Texas. I went to a few places today and I've been doing quite a bit of research online, and this seems like the best fit for me as far as price, reliability, power and style.
But I still have quite a few questions! Would y'all mind helping me out?
1. I am trying to decide between the 125 and the 150 cc. The price difference is roughly $400, and I am leaning toward the 150 cc because I like the color options better, because it does have a bit more get-up-and-go when you need it, because I'm a heavy-ish girl (at 170 pounds), and because I intend to take passengers at some point. What do you recommend between the 125 and the 150 cc?
2. Do you have any advice regarding Genuine Scooters or the Buddy in particular?
3. What gear do I need? I know I want to get a helmet and a jacket for sure. Is there anything else I need? Any advice on the helmet and/or jacket?
4. What accessories should I look into? I am considering a basket as well as a trunk.
5. What else should I know or consider before buying?
6. If you have a 125 or 150 cc scooter, what is your insurance like?
7. Can you negotiate on the price of scooters the same way you do on the price of cars?
-j
PS - I am really hoping to buy this week so that I can try to ride with the Houston Scooter Battalion on Sunday!!!

| Newbie - Hoping to scoot! |
[02 Feb 2009|02:30pm] |
So... I sold my car this weekend. :) I am now sort of in a crunch to decide what to do... should I replace it at all? If so, should I get another car? Maybe a scooter? The only thing I have decided for SURE is that I am not going to spend more than $5k.
So that's why I am here -- I NEED YOUR ADVICE!
So what do y'all think? What are your thoughts on scooters? What brands should I look into? Which should I avoid? (Clearly I'm leaning toward a Vespa!) What are the pros and cons of scooter ownership? What do you wish you'd known before you started scooting? How safe do you feel? 50 cc vs. 150 cc? Used vs. New? What gear and accessories do I need? Will I need to get a motorcycle DL (in Texas)? What does maintenance cost you on a yearly basis? What else should I know?
Any thoughts, comments, advice, and/or concerns are MORE than welcome. :)
Thanks!
-j
PS - Just as an FYI, I live with a partner who does have a car so the scooter will be my primary vehicle to travel around town (Houston) and to use to get to and from work (a roughly 3 mile commute each way), but I will have a car available for long trips or huge outings to the grocery store or whatever.

This is at least the second time I've heard of someone on a twist-n-go who thinks they mistook the gas for the brake. Yeah...right.

I think you're supposed to to toss those when finished, not attempt recycling.
